Luminator Technology Group has completed a major phase of modernizing its customer experience by unifying all North American customer-facing operations onto a single platform.

Luminator Unifies All Customer-Facing Operations onto One Platform

Luminator Technology Group announced the completion of a key phase in its data-driven customer experience modernization initiative, with all North American field service operations now unified on a single customer platform.

The milestone completes the consolidation of every customer-facing team onto one system and opens the next phase of the work. Luminator's customer care, technical support, field service, repair, training, and project management teams now work from one shared, real-time view of each customer's fleet, assets, and service history, with artificial intelligence generating health scores for those assets to help teams gauge equipment condition and prioritize service.

What the investment delivers for customers:

One system, complete context. Whether the need is a support case, a repair, or an on-site visit, teams work from a single shared record of the customer’s fleet and history.

Faster, smarter field service. Work orders are routed to the technician with the right skills and parts, and technicians arrive on site with full visibility into the equipment and prior service.

Listening at scale. Customer satisfaction and Net Promoter Score survey programs across North America and Europe channel feedback directly into how Luminator improves.

Proactive support on the horizon. A Proactive Alarm Monitoring program is turning equipment telemetry into service cases before a customer has to call, with AI-enabled service capabilities next on the roadmap.

Taken together, these steps point toward the next horizon Luminator is working to reach: increasingly predictive service that anticipates and manages maintenance needs before they surface, keeping fleets running with fewer interruptions, said company officials.

Luminator Completes Key Phase of its Customer Experience Transformation, Unifies All Customer-Facing Operations onto One Platform

Multi-year customer experience investment gives every customer one real-time view of their fleet, expanded feedback programs, and proactive, AI-enabled support.

PLANO, TX, USA — August 13, 2026 — Luminator Technology Group (“Luminator” or “the Company”), a global transportation technology provider of software, hardware, and AI-powered solutions, today announced the completion of a key phase in its data-driven customer experience modernization initiative, with all North American field service operations now unified on a single customer platform.

The announcement advances Luminator’s broader transformation. With nearly 100 years in the transportation industry, Luminator has grown through organic expansion and acquisition, moving from an early focus on lighting to the passenger information and video security systems it delivers today in more than 85 countries. As it brings software, data, and hardware together into scalable systems, Luminator is advancing its support model to match, so agencies get dependable service as their fleets and technology grow.

“Luminator has grown from ten separate brands into one company, and from a hardware supplier into a trusted integrated technology partner,” said Magnus Friberg, Chief Executive Officer of Luminator Technology Group. “Investing in the customer experience is the natural next chapter. Operators should be able to count on the same quality in our support as in our products. That is how we deepen long-term relationships, and how we build a more durable business.”

Taken together, these steps point toward the next horizon Luminator is working to reach: increasingly predictive service that anticipates and manages maintenance needs before they surface, keeping fleets running with fewer interruptions.

The transformation began in early 2024. Luminator started by consolidating case management for its customer care and technical support teams onto one system, then extended it team by team. Along the way, Luminator standardized processes across those teams, strengthened dashboards and reporting for the Company and its customers, and rolled out a new learning platform with structured training for agency staff and its global teams. This week’s field service launch brings on-site service into the same environment, closing the loop between what a customer reports and what happens when a technician arrives.

The gains are measurable. Luminator has brought roughly 40,000 field work orders a year onto the platform, reduced support case resolution time by 50%, and holds a 4.6 out of 5 customer satisfaction score.

“We set out to give every customer one Luminator to work with, no matter how they reach us,” said Justin McDonnell, Vice President of Customer Experience at Luminator Technology Group. “Today our teams answer technical cases in about 24 minutes on average, and with field service now on the same platform, a technician arrives fully informed, with a holistic snapshot of customer health and the ability to resolve issues across every aspect of their operation. This is a milestone, not a finish line.”

The field service launch is the latest step in Luminator’s customer experience journey, with more to come. Luminator's strategy is driven by three assurances all transit agencies need: information riders can trust, security across every route, and visibility across the fleet. Software is what connects them. By pairing scalable software and proven hardware with AI applied to in-service systems, Luminator gives agencies of any size common ground to modernize on.

About Luminator

The 2026 FIFA World Cup put public transport systems across North America under unprecedented operational pressure, with agencies managing millions of additional passenger journeys in host cities. “A tournament like this is the hardest usability test our industry ever faces,” says Magnus Friberg, CEO of Luminator, whose passenger information and onboard security technologies support transit operators in all 16 World Cup host markets across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Within the 2026 FIFA World Cup, whose final will be held on 19 July 2026, 26 US agencies in 11 host cities mobilizing expanded services.

In this interview with Sustainable Bus, Magnus Friberg discusses how major events accelerate technology deployment, the role of AI in public transport, and why investments made for peak demand should become part of everyday operations.

Friberg has served as CEO of Luminator Technology Group since November 2023, leading the global provider of passenger information, software, data and AI-enabled technologies for public transport. Before joining Luminator, he was CEO of onboard connectivity specialist Icomera and previously held executive roles at Scanreco and Reverb Networks. Founded in 1928, Luminator employs around 1,000 people and serves customers in more than 85 countries.

FIFA World Cup as a stress test for transit

You lead a company that operates in more than 85 countries, and you have watched transit systems evolve across many markets. As North America hosts the largest event in the sport’s history this summer, what is your read on where the North American market is today, and where it is heading?

Luminator has been part of the fabric of North American transit since 1928, and today our passenger information and onboard video surveillance solutions are on thousands of buses and railcars across the continent. This summer, we’re supporting operators in all sixteen World Cup host-markets in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

As for where the market stands, I am optimistic, and I do not say that lightly. North America is one of the most demanding markets we operate in. The scale of the networks, the complexity of funding, and rising expectations around safety and rider experience all land at once.

Those who treat this summer as a one-time spike will be back to business as usual in the fall. Those who treat it as a preview of what their systems can deliver every day will set the standard for the next decade. I am betting on the second group.

The promise of AI is turning data agencies already have into something operators, planners, and riders can feel. In practice, that means three things for us. Better real-time passenger information, because the system can reason about what is actually happening. Smarter maintenance and asset management, because anomaly detection can flag a problem before it becomes a failure. And safer operations, because intelligence can surface what matters from hours of video and sensor data no human could review in full. Our newest AI applications use video to detect issues affecting rider experience inside and outside the bus. AI also analyzes driver behavior to power driver-assistance tools that make operations safer.

-Magnus Friberg, CEO, Luminator

A tournament like this drops millions of first-time riders into systems overnight, many of them visitors who do not know the network or speak the local language. What does it take for a transit system to be legible and reassuring to someone using it for the very first time, and what does that challenge teach agencies about their everyday riders?

A tournament like this is the hardest usability test our industry ever faces, because it removes every assumption. The rider does not know the network, may not read the language, and has minutes, not months, to build confidence.

The discipline for that first-time rider, clear information that stays consistent across onboard displays, stops and stations, web, and mobile apps, and stays calm under load, is exactly the discipline your daily commuter quietly depends on.

So, the real lesson is not about visitors at all. The everyday rider deserves the same care we work so hard to deliver when the world is watching. Designing for the stranger is how you end up serving the regular.

A summer like this is a stress test of relationships as much as of systems. What does it reveal about how agencies and their technology partners work together when the stakes are highest, and how does Luminator think about showing up as a partner in those moments?

A summer like this tests relationships before it tests equipment. When a system is under real load, you find out very quickly whether a supplier is a vendor or a partner.

A vendor’s job ended at the purchase order. A partner is in the room six months later asking whether the system works, and on the phone at the hard moments, sometimes literally on site.

Look at our recent work with a major Australian agency: when system strain exposed critical technical gaps, we brought the full weight of our global organization to bear. We deployed three specialized teams, from Quality Assurance in Europe, to our engineers in Brazil, to our local team in Australia, to embed with agency staff and stabilize the network.

Building a seamlessly integrated portfolio takes time, especially for a company like Luminator that has grown through both organic development and acquisition. What we can promise is total honesty. Partnerships only survive when both sides tell each other the truth, and major events are where that trust gets proven or exposed.

North America’s scale and diversity are distinctive. The size of the networks, the federal and local funding dynamics, the distances involved, all produce an operational pragmatism I admire. European systems, by contrast, often benefit from density and longer planning horizons that let standards mature. Neither is better. North America can learn from Europe’s appetite for integration and long-term standardization. Europe can learn from North America’s willingness to move, to pilot, to adapt under pressure.

-Magnus Friberg, CEO, Luminator

Magnus Friberg and Luminator’s perspective across markets

Behind every smooth event are the operators and frontline staff running service under real pressure. What does supporting those people well look like during a peak like this, and how much of rider safety ultimately rests on the situational awareness of the people doing the work?

Behind every smooth event is an operator making decisions under pressure and frontline staff absorbing stress so that riders never feel it.

A great deal of safety, more than the public realizes, rests on whether those people have situational awareness and feel supported by their tools. That is why so much of what we build is aimed at the operator as much as the rider: the visibility, the video, the clarity that lets a person do a hard job well.

The lesson for agencies: you cannot deliver a safe and well-informed rider experience on the backs of people who feel unsupported. The two rise and fall together.

Having built and observed systems across Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and the Americas, what does North America do differently from other markets you know well, for better and for worse, and what could each learn from the other?

I have built and watched systems across Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and the Americas, and I resist easy generalizations, because every market reflects its own history.

That said, North America’s scale and diversity are distinctive.

As a Swedish-born leader running a company headquartered in Texas, I live in that exchange every day, and part of Luminator’s value is that we carry lessons across those borders. The best ideas in transit do not respect geography.

Much of the market still thinks of Luminator as a hardware company. We earned that reputation nearly a century ago by building signs, displays, and communication systems. But today we work across software-driven networks built on proven technology, aimed at the three outcomes our customers care about: smarter operations, safer environments, and better rider journeys.

We are organizing ourselves around outcomes, not a product list. That is the throughline of what we will bring to APTA EXPO in Chicago this fall: software-driven safety and security across every environment, our latest video surveillance, and enhanced passenger communications and control across the fleet network.

-Magnus Friberg, CEO, Luminator

The impact of events on the deployment of new technologies

Large-scale events often accelerate the adoption of new technology. Are you seeing agencies use this summer as an opportunity to pilot or scale solutions that are likely to become permanent once the event is over?

Yes, one of the more encouraging trends I see. Large events have always accelerated adoption because they give agencies a reason and a deadline to do what they already knew they should. The risk is that new capability gets framed as temporary event infrastructure, quietly switched off once the crowds leave. The agencies doing this well choose the opposite, using the event to justify investments in better passenger information, stronger onboard security, and analytics that let them see their own operation, and they intend to keep them.

By expanding capacity and multi-modal connectivity for event days, agencies are building a repeatable blueprint for future events and permanent transit infrastructure, with insights far too valuable to abandon. That is why we have multiple pilot applications in play across the industry, focused on passenger experience, rider safety, and revenue capture both on and off vehicles.

My advice to any agency is simple: don’t treat what you stood up this summer as a temporary fix. It is the foundation you need to scale. Keep the systems running, study the data, and use these capabilities to flex when ridership shifts or the next big event arrives.

How AI can benefit public transport

Buses and transit vehicles are increasingly connected digital platforms generating vast amounts of operational and passenger data. What role do you see artificial intelligence playing in turning that data into better operational decisions, from real-time passenger information to maintenance and asset management?

I want to answer this without the hype. A modern bus is a connected platform generating enormous volumes of operational and passenger data. For most of this industry’s history, that data sat unused. The promise of AI is not novelty. It is finally turning data agencies already have into something operators, planners, and riders can feel.

In practice, that means three things for us. Better real-time passenger information, because the system can reason about what is actually happening rather than what was scheduled.

The outcome is spotting safety issues and operational gaps faster, so agencies can act.

Our approach is deliberately grounded. We focus AI on real transit problems, we are transparent about what it can and cannot do, and we keep human judgment in the loop. AI is a tool for the people who run transit, not a replacement for them.

"A tournament like this is the hardest usability test our industry ever faces, because it removes every assumption. Designing for the stranger is how you end up serving the regular."

-Magnus Friberg, CEO, Luminator

Much of the market still thinks of Luminator as a hardware company. What do you want agencies and the wider industry to understand about where the company is now, and what will you be bringing to APTA EXPO in Chicago this October?

Much of the market still thinks of Luminator as a hardware company. We earned that reputation nearly a century ago by building signs, displays, and communication systems that agencies count on every day, and that work is still core to who we are.

But the perception is a decade behind reality. Today we work across software-driven networks built on proven technology, aimed at the three outcomes our customers care about: smarter operations, safer environments, and better rider journeys. The shift is additive, not a pivot away from the reliability that built the trust.

We are organizing ourselves around outcomes, not a product list. That is the throughline of what we will bring to APTA EXPO in Chicago this fall: software-driven safety and security across every environment, our latest video surveillance, and enhanced passenger communications and control across the fleet network.

The honest version of our story is a company with deep roots in transit technology becoming the partner agencies need beyond the hardware, across software, data, and services for the life of their assets.

Looking past the final whistle and toward Los Angeles in 2028, what do you most want the industry to carry forward and build on from this summer?

Our industry has a habit of treating major events as finish lines. They are not. They are the clearest, fairest test we will ever get, and the most important work happens after the final whistle. So, what I most want the industry to carry forward is the standard itself. The clarity, the coordination, and the visible safety we summon when the world is watching should become the everyday floor, not the memory of a special occasion.

I hope agencies keep working from a shared picture across transit, public safety, and city partners; keep the data from this summer and let it inform ordinary decisions in October and beyond; and extend the trust they earn from a first-time visitor to the commuter who rides every day.

We have two years to Los Angeles. The agencies that treat this summer as a rehearsal, not a performance, will be ready for it.

Back in April, I left APTA’s 50
th

Legislative Conference with one message unmistakably clear: safety is the top priority for everyone in this industry.

It was there in remarks from Leanne Redden, APTA’s chair, who framed our industry’s charge as a commitment to safe, accessible, and modern mobility. It was there in the FTA panel where Deputy Associate Administrator for Transit Safety and Oversight Teona Edwards spoke plainly about reducing fatalities and protecting transit workers. It was in USDOT Chief of Staff Pete Meachum’s remarks the following morning. It was in Representative Rick Larsen’s reminder that riders should be thinking about their final destination, not whether they will get there at all.

Safety was not a tagline at this conference. It was a through line—present in every panel and keynote discussion, every hallway conversation, and every handout. For an industry absorbing the aftershocks of a pandemic, a leadership transition at FTA, and a reauthorization cycle that will shape the next decade, I think that emphasis is exactly right.

And yet, for all the volume this topic carried in Washington, the work of safety itself is rarely loud. It lives on the frontlines, in the hundreds of small, uneventful moments a rider never thinks about because everything went the way it should. Very little of that work is announced or celebrated, and that is often by design. The standard we are asked to meet is the absence of incident. When safety is working, it is being upheld quietly, every day, through practices, technology, and the stewardship of the riders who trust us to get them home.

The Work Ahead

APTA’s 2026 advocacy message that “public transportation drives our economy, connects our communities, and moves America forward” is true. The quieter truth beneath it is that none of that happens unless riders feel safe enough to step on board and drivers feel supported enough to stay in their seats.

Safety is not a hardware problem, not a software problem, not a policy problem alone. It is a partnership problem. Agencies cannot solve it alone. Suppliers cannot solve it by shipping equipment. Congress cannot legislate it into being without the industry showing what good looks like in practice.

What this moment asks of our industry is better, stronger, and more efficient collaboration. A reauthorization that treats safety and rider experience as one conversation, not two. Procurement processes that reward partners whose innovation is oriented around riders, not feature lists. And a shared discipline across suppliers and agencies to turn the operational data that already exists into intelligence that agencies can actually use, rather than leaving it siloed in systems that were never designed to work together.

Safety Is Not a Feature; It Is the Contract

The United States loses more than 40,000 people to roadway deaths in a typical year. Public transportation remains among the safest ways to move. That’s not a talking point, it’s an obligation. The safer and more reliable our systems feel, the more we honor the quiet social agreement that makes transit work: a rider steps on board, trusts the driver, trusts the agency, trusts the equipment, and trusts that they will arrive home safely.

Riders do not grade safety by statistics. They grade it by what they can see, hear, feel, and sense. Does the driver have the situational awareness to know what is happening behind them? If something goes wrong, will the video record what is needed to make the next shift safer than this one?

Safety, in practice, lives in those small, repeated moments of daily clarity.

Trust Is Cumulative

Randy Clarke, who leads the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, spoke in Washington about his agency reaching one of its highest customer satisfaction levels alongside historically low crime numbers.

The two facts belong together. Confidence is built the way it is lost: one ride at a time. Each trip without confusion, each driver who feels supported by their equipment, each shift that ends the way it started adds to a quiet reserve of trust most riders never think about but absolutely feel.

Across Congress, FTA, and agency leaders themselves, I heard that this reserve is under pressure. Worker assaults, fare-evasion dynamics, families asking whether a stroller or a wheelchair user can navigate a platform with dignity, and the basic question of whether a station feels like a welcoming place. These are not separate issues. They all draw from the same reserve of rider trust, and that trust is slower to rebuild than it is to lose.

From Supplier to Solutions Partner

Luminator has worked in this industry for nearly a century. We have had the privilege of working alongside leading bus manufacturers and many of the country’s largest transit operators. Much of the market still thinks of us primarily as a hardware company—a perception that’s about a decade behind reality. Today, Luminator delivers a unified transit platform that brings together software, data management, and AI-enabled analytics with proven hardware, all aimed at three outcomes: smarter operations, safer environments, and better rider journeys.

But that is the smallest honest description of what we do. A more accurate description is that we’re a conduit of safety.

A properly designed overview sign is not a sign; it is a passenger recovering their bearings in a disorienting station. A properly placed camera is not a camera; it is an operator and an investigator reconstructing what happened so the next shift is safer than the last. An analytics layer is not a dashboard; it is the difference between an agency drowning in raw operational data and one that can actually see itself clearly and act on what it sees.

I left the Legislative Conference grateful for the urgency I heard across the conference. It reinforced something important: when our industry treats safety as a promise we renew every day—not a milestone we celebrate once—we’re all ready for what’s ahead.

June 5, 2026

As seen in Mass Transit Magazine.
View the article here.

By Magnus Friberg, CEO | Luminator Technology Group

Just a few months ago, North American transit moved a Super Bowl. In days, 16 host cities across three countries will move the FIFA World Cup—the largest international football tournament ever staged. Two summers later, Los Angeles will move the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Between those bookends sits a calendar of national conventions, championships and tours that on any given weekend will turn a regional transit system into the front door of an entire city.

For our industry, this is the moment we have been waiting for. The chance to demonstrate in front of the largest audience what modern transit can do. Moving millions in minutes. Navigating dynamic schedules. Keeping fans safe.

It is also the moment we have been bracing for.

I want to say something our industry knows but rarely says out loud: We frame mega events as exceptions.

The trade conversation treats them as a category apart, a special deployment, a once-a-decade test. We celebrate the performance on display and then we move on. The narrative we accept is that the spike was extraordinary, the scrutiny was unusual, and the standard agencies delivered for those 72 hours was the standard of a special occasion, not a preview of what's possible every day.

There is truth in that framing, but there is much more to it.

The exceptional is the preview

The truth is that the standard agencies achieve during mega events is the same standard agencies work toward every day. Clear information. Reliable arrivals. Visible safety. A team that anticipates rather than reacts.

The fact that we can produce that experience under pressure on a Sunday in February when the eyes of the country are on a stadium is in itself the proof of what the same systems can deliver on a Tuesday morning in March when no one is watching.

Mega events do not test our capacity for excellence. They reveal it. They also expose, just as plainly, the gap between our highest potential and the ability to meet the moment.

This summer, our industry is looking to ambitiously close that gap.

Coordination, not procurement, is the gating issue

From where I sit, the early questions in mega event planning tend to be technology questions. Will the displays push updates fast enough? Are the cameras positioned? Can the dispatching tools handle the load? These are real questions. They are not the gating questions.

The gating questions are about coordination: whether transit, venue operators, public safety and city officials are singing from the same song sheet; whether agencies that share a region share data; whether the bus driver on a detour route knows what the rail dispatcher knows; and whether the rider switching modes mid-trip sees the same information at the platform that they saw on their phone three minutes earlier.

Technology supports coordination. It does not substitute for it. Riders feel the difference when those threads are woven together, and they feel it more clearly when they are not. The agencies that will earn lasting credit this summer are the ones that have been quietly investing in the connective tissue between systems and between partners, long before the World Cup schedule was published.

That investment is harder to fund and harder to celebrate than a piece of equipment. It is also the investment that lasts.

Safety is the contract

There is a contract between every rider and every agency. The rider steps on board, trusts the operator, trusts the equipment, trusts that the next-stop information is right, that the route will run and that the agency will get them home safely. That contract is renewed one trip at a time, and it is broken one trip at a time. Major events compress it into days of intense, public-facing performance. They do not change it.

Safety is the through line. Not safety as a feature, statistic or a campaign. Safety as the standing promise that the system riders board today will be at least as trustworthy as the one they boarded yesterday. Visitors and locals grade safety the same way: by what they can see, hear and sense. Does the station feel welcoming? Does the operator have the situational awareness to know what is happening behind them? If something goes wrong, the system is structured to learn from it rather than bury it.

Mega events do not change the contract. They put it in the spotlight.

Where suppliers fit

Luminator started as a hardware company and now works across software, data and artificial intelligence-enabled technology all aimed at helping customers achieve their goals of smarter operations, safer environments and better rider journeys.

I am not raising that issue to make a sales point. I am raising it because the mega events conversation has too often been framed as a procurement conversation and suppliers like us have a responsibility to push past that misconception.

Our job is not to sell agencies a piece of equipment for the World Cup. It is to help agencies carry the standard set this summer into the years that follow. We should organize ourselves as a partner around the integrations, analytics and field support that turn one good weekend into one good year and one good year into a step change everyone can feel.

The work ahead

This summer is a once-in-a-generation showcase: 16 World Cup host cities across North America will run their transit systems in front of the world. In two years, Los Angeles will do the same. The headlines will reward the visible work, the operational moments visitors notice and remember.

The harder, more durable work is what happens after. It will depend on whether the discipline of the event time command center carries forward into everyday operations; whether the data agencies generate during a peak weekend feeds the everyday decisions they make in October; and whether the trust earned from a visiting family becomes the trust extended to the regular commuter—and the trust earned in public transit as a whole.

Our industry has a habit of treating mega events as a finish line. They are not. They are the clearest, fairest test we will ever face in what our systems are capable of and a public commitment to keep delivering at that level when no one is watching.

We are more than equal to the moment. We just have to agree, collectively, that the moment is the new standard.

Balancing Safety and Privacy: How AI-Powered Facial Blurring Supports Modern Transit

Public transit agencies rely on onboard video systems to enhance passenger safety, support incident response, and improve daily operations. At the same time, agencies face increasing expectations—and regulations—around protecting rider privacy. As transit technology evolves, the question becomes clear: How can agencies maintain strong security practices without compromising individual privacy?

Public transit agencies rely on onboard video systems to enhance passenger safety, support incident response, and improve daily operations. At the same time, agencies face increasing expectations—and regulations—around protecting rider privacy. As transit technology evolves, the question becomes clear: How can agencies maintain strong security practices without compromising individual privacy?

The Challenge: Video Access vs. Privacy Protection

Mobile video systems are essential for incident review, operator training, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. However, sharing or reviewing footage that includes identifiable passengers can create privacy concerns and regulatory risk. Agencies need a solution that allows them to use video effectively—while keeping sensitive data protected.

Luminator’s Answer: Automated Facial Blurring

Luminator’s AI-powered facial blurring capability gives transit agencies a way to securely access and share video footage while minimizing exposure of personally identifiable information. Available as part of the latest mSET 2.3 release, facial blurring is designed to be applied as a post-processing option, allowing agencies to maintain full control over how video is used and distributed.

This technology supports common agency workflows—such as investigations, data requests, and operational reviews—while helping agencies align with privacy regulations and protect rider trust.

Why Facial Blurring Matters for Transit Agencies

By integrating automated blurring into their video management practices, agencies can:

Enable faster incident response while reducing privacy risk

Share footage securely with internal teams or external partners

Strengthen compliance efforts related to data protection requirements

Build rider confidence by safeguarding individual privacy during video surveillance

Importantly, facial blurring supports the idea that safety and privacy are not trade-offs—they are complementary goals.

Privacy-Focused Innovation for the Future of Transit

As expectations around transparency and data responsibility continue to grow, transit agencies need technology that evolves with them. Luminator’s mobile video solutions are built to support today’s operational needs while preparing agencies for future privacy and security challenges.

With AI-powered facial blurring, agencies can move forward with confidence—knowing they’re protecting riders while still delivering safe, efficient public transportation.

Luminator has launched RoadRunner Edge, a new onboard video solution designed for mid-market transit agencies and smaller fleets in North America.

The product was introduced ahead of the APTA Mobility Conference taking place from 17 to 20 May in Salt Lake City, where the company showcased the system at booth 600.

Luminator launches RoadRunner Edge for North America

RoadRunner Edge joins the existing RoadRunner Pro offering and operates on the same mSET software platform, allowing operators to manage video systems across mixed fleets through a single interface. According to Luminator, the new solution is aimed at agencies requiring onboard video recording, remote monitoring and fleet management capabilities with simplified deployment and compatibility with both analog and IP cameras.

The system includes fan-less hardware designed for transit operating environments, with built-in GPS, Wi-Fi and a 7-inch HD touchscreen. Luminator states that the solution supports onboard recording for incident review and claim management, while centralized management functions are handled through the mSET platform.

RoadRunner Edge is positioned for shuttle, paratransit, circulator and mixed-vehicle fleets, while RoadRunner Pro remains focused on applications involving AI-enabled cameras, analytics and higher camera-count configurations.

“Transit fleets are not one size fits all,” said Magnus Friberg, Chief Executive Officer of Luminator Technology Group. “RoadRunner Edge addresses everyday fleet needs, while RoadRunner Pro is designed for more complex, AI-driven environments. Operators can choose the right solution for each route within their fleet and manage it all in one place with our mSET platform.”

New offering gives North American transit agencies one platform to manage
video across mixed fleets, from baseline reliability to AI at scale

Luminator Technology Group (“Luminator”) today introduced RoadRunner™ Edge, a mobile video solution purpose-built for the everyday safety and security needs of mid-market transit agencies and smaller fleets. RoadRunner™ Edge joins RoadRunner™ Pro – Luminator’s premium offering for complex, high performance environments – on a shared software platform that gives operators unified remote monitoring and management across every vehicle in service.

The launch comes ahead of the American Public Transportation Association’s (“APTA”) Mobility Conference, May 17-20 in Salt Lake City, where Luminator will be exhibiting in booth #600.

For nearly a century, Luminator has partnered with the transit operators who keep cities moving. Founded in 1928, the company has evolved from an onboard hardware manufacturer into a global mobility platform that integrates software, data, and proven technology to advance the intelligence, safety, and rider confidence of public transit operations.

RoadRunner™ Edge is the next step in that evolution, extending modern video surveillance and security to agencies that have historically been underserved by enterprise-class systems. It delivers dependable onboard video, fast deployment, and right sized coverage to users looking to standardize video across vehicles with simplicity and cost efficiency.

What RoadRunner™ Edge Delivers

RoadRunner™ Edge is engineered for fleets that need reliable, modern video that is easy to operate. The system delivers:

Reliable onboard recording for fast incident review and rider claim resolution, backed by simultaneous recording for redundant storage in demanding environments.

Rugged, fan-less hardware engineered to withstand vibration, dust, and electromagnetic interference, with built-in GPS and Wi-Fi and a 7-inch HD touchscreen for live-view monitoring at the vehicle.

Backwards compatibility with existing analog and IP cameras for retrofit and replacement projects, right sized for shuttle, paratransit, circulator, and mixed-vehicle environments where consistency matters more than camera count.

Centralized fleet management through the same mSET™ platform that powers RoadRunner™ Pro, so operators can monitor health, respond to alarms, and remotely download or play back footage from every vehicle in one place.

Two Products. One Platform. Built for Transit

RoadRunner™ Edge and RoadRunner™ Pro are designed to work together. Both run on mSET™, Luminator’s transit video management software, so operators can deploy the right hardware for each vehicle and manage the entire fleet through a single interface.

Edge is the focused, standard offering for essential fleet needs. Pro is built for agencies pushing the limits of video intelligence, including AI-enabled cameras, advanced analytics, driver monitoring, and high camera-count configurations. Agencies do not step down to Edge or step up to Pro; they choose the right sized tool for the job.

Where Luminator Is Going

Luminator’s strategy is anchored in three priorities every modern transit agency faces: information riders can trust, security across every route, and visibility across the fleet. The throughline is software. By combining reliable hardware, scalable software, and end-to-end services, Luminator is building the foundation for agencies of any size to adopt, expand, and modernize on common ground. Data generated by these systems become the foundational intelligence to power safer service and smarter operations.

Commercially Available Now

RoadRunner™ Edge is available now for trial by North American transit operators; full availability at scale to follow. Luminator will preview the product onsite at APTA Mobility, May 17-20 in Salt Lake City, Utah, at booth #600.
